A fitness training journal, or training log, is one of the most important tools that you should always keep handy in your gym bag or your workout room at home. This is one of the best ways to keep track of your progress, stay motivated and also guide you to success on your fitness journey.
I have kept a training journal ever since I started working out and it is one of the best things that I did that helped me achieve my fitness goals. It’s always interesting to look back at my different training routines and exercise programs and to see the results that I achieved while following them. This helps me to see what worked and what didn’t and plan successfully for the future.
Here are 7 good reasons why you should keep a training journal and track your workouts too.
Hold Yourself Accountable
There’s nothing worse than looking in your training journal and seeing days that you have skipped in your routine. This is a big blow to your self confidence and your ego.
Keeping a training journal will help you to hold yourself accountable for your success or failure of your program, no matter what your goal is. You will have to answer to you and only you.
Motivation and Inspiration
It’s always motivating to see where you started, how far you have come and in what direction you are headed. There may be some days that you really don’t feel like going to the gym to work out but once you take a look at your training journal and see the progress you have made you soon find yourself motivated to keep the progress rolling.
Measure Your Progress
There only other gauge besides this one is the progress you see in the mirror. Keeping a training journal will let you monitor your strength increases form week to week. You can also keep track of your weight and body part measurements in your journal if you want. Regardless of what you chart besides your workouts, measuring your progress goes hand in hand with my previous point on motivation.
Learn From Your Mistakes
When you have a record of everything that you have done in your training program, you can always look back to see what worked and what didn’t. There may be times when you embark on a program that took you backward at some point. It’s easy to correct any mistake when you have the reasons right in front of you.
Build Self Confidence
When you hold yourself accountable, are constantly motivated, can see how for you have progressed and have learned from your mistakes you will build up your self confidence. Self confidence is so important in your quest for excellence and a training journal will only help you create it.
Seeing that you have outperformed your own expectations will open your eyes to the fact that you really can do it! A training journal will help you to take it to the next level.
Plan Your Next Step
The past will help predict your future so take a good look at your training journal and plot your course for what’s next.
Your journal, like a map, will provide you with great insight as to what road you shall take and how long it will take to get there.
It’s all right there in front of you; what worked and what didn’t. So take in all of that information and plan your work. Then work your plan.
Happy training!

Any journal that you keep helps you to know whether you are making progress or not each day. Having a fitness training journal is a very good idea as you are motivated each day to work out and you can also keep track of the progress you are making with your training.

Exactly Thomas! When you can see your daily progress, or lack thereof, you keep yourself inspired to keep on moving forward. I say “lack thereof” because sometimes when you see that you are slacking in certain areas, you will want to push a little harder to make some progress.
Thanks for the comment Thomas!
